Further List of Awards DEMONSTRATIONS TO-MORROW The Manawatu Competitions Society’s festival was continued at the Opera House and Empire Hall yesterday and considerable progress was made with the various classes. The competitive section of the programme w-ill bo concluded this evening, and the demonstration concerts will take place to-morrow afternoon and evening. Additional results are:— Vocal. Ladies’ operatic solo: Miss L. Johnston (Masterton) I, Miss C. Taylor (Hamilton) 2, Misses M. Clifford and J. Bovis equal 3, Miss R. Bull v.h.c.; ten entries. “A fairly good class,” stated the judge, “but most of the voices were not up to operatic standard. The winner gained in temperament what was lost in musicianship and faulty production. I liked some of the other voices better and I hope they never get to the stage of forcing the tone and ruining whatever voices they have.” Popular song, girls, 12 and under 17: Nancy Gilroy (Napier) I, Olga Hodge (Wanganui) 2, Leah Tozer (New Plymouth) 3, Heather Douglas (Masterton) v.h.c., Shirley Melville, Rita Cowry, Stella Chambers (Napier), Betty Olsen, Margaret Cushing, Nancy Martin (Napier), Ngaire Keen (Napier) all h.c.; 22 entries. “A very good class,” commented the judge. “The songs were many and varied.
