Scout Notes

Ist. Palmerston North (Central) Group

Owing to school holidays attendances have only been fair, but quite a good bit

of work has been done in the past two or three weeks. Work has commenced in earnest for the concert, which we are giving, probably in about two month’s time, and which we hopo is going to be an overwhelming success. The following have passed badges: —Book binder, P.L. F. Arnold; basket worker, P.L. F. Arnold and R. Brougham; cyclist, Scout A. Ferguson, M. Watson and A Perry. All Saints’ Troop At the meeting of the troop held on Friday the sth, at 7 p.m. The inspection was won by the “Morepork” patrol. After some general announcements a haka practice was hold. The patrols then went to their corners and did second class work. The boys who are in the play held a practice. Mr Panting came and gave us a singing practice. Next we presented three boys with their ambulance badge and Scout E. Bass was presented with his pathfinder’s badge. We followed this with games of dodge-ball. The troop was dismissed at 9.15 p.m. St. Peters The St. Peter’s boys had a very exciting time on Wednesday night when they visited To Awe Awe troop and played them at big ring and handball. Tho following are the results: — Handball, St. Peter’s A2; Te Awe Awe A none. Most of the players were very hot because it was a very difficult game. St. Peter’s B team lost to Te Awe Awe B 3 —2. The results for big ring:—St. Peter’s won the first game and Te Awe Awe the second, so you see it came out oven. The St. Peter’s boys provided supper which was given to tho troops after the game. The Scoutmaster of To Awe Awe said that he was very glad it came out even, then presented the St. Peter’s troop with a Chinese call, also S.M. Looser and his troop gave them three cheers. Two nights later their own meeting was held. The inspection was good except some boys forgot their staves. Bob Brown passed his ambulance, D. Priest, G. Wilson and H. Kenwick received their second class badge, also N. Cooke passed his signalling. A game of handball was played which was a draw, also a game of socks during the game. Mr J. Kenwick, the secretary for the troop, visited S.M. Looser and his boys. Mr Renwick explained all about tho weekend camp which is to bo held next week. The points for the evening were as follows: —Huia 47, Kingfisher 395, Tui 355. The troop then dismissed. 2nd. Palmerston North Terrace End We were agreeably surprised and very pleased to receive a visit from our old Scouter Mrs Coles last Friday. After inspecting the troop Mrs Coles gave a short talk and then donated a camp oven and large tea-pot towards our camping equipment. Our very best thanks are due to Mrs Coles for her ever continual interest in our troop and her practical support. Last week-end 22 boys and the two Scouters went into camp at Colyton. Everyone cycled out and took their own gear with them. A great week-end was spent by all and some practical outdoor scouting was very much enjoyed. We were 22 very tired boys who battled home against a tough head wind but all voted the camp a great success and are looking forward to more of these. After a good evening of Scout badge work, an inter-patrol tug-of-war competition was held which resulted in the Ivea patrol coming out on top. This is our new patrol so perhaps thats a good omen. Look out you other patrol leaders there is not much separating you in the patrol points’ competition. What Ho! St. Pat’s you’ll have to look to your laurels when you play us at handball, we have got a team of dark horses down this end of the city. 3rd. Palmerston North West End Troop On Monday we had a parent’s evening. There were 32 Scouts present. There were close on 50 visitors present. The evening opened as usual with prayers and flag-break and inspection which was won by the “Dove” patrol with “Hawke” patrol as runners up. The “Dove” patrol then under the leadership of Des Dear gave a knottying and Scout law display. The “Hawke” patrol followed up with uses of the Scout stove. Tom Fletcher was P.L. of the “Hawke” patrol. Following this, Scouter Collis presented the inter-patrol competition shield to the “Bull” patrol. Stars were presented to many Scouts. The “Bull” patrol did an exceeding good display of ambulance work, Ken Stockdalo acting as leader. As a welcome to the visitors tho “Seagull” patrol did a signalling stunt. Each patrol did a display of handwork and many visitors remarked on the show. Following tho Scout displays games aud supper were had. Ex-assis-tant Ivan Davcy and P.L. Dave Humphreys made all supper arrangements. At (he close the Scout committee had their annual meeting. sth. Te Awe Awe As soon as flag-break and inspection was completed we had a welcome visit from St. Peter’s troop. Tho evening was then devoted to games of handball and dodge-ball etc. The results of the. games were about equal between both troops. St. Peter’s had generously brought some eatables with them, enough for both troops, so a very enjoyable supper was partaken by all. Before the departure of fit. Peter’s troop. D. Brattle passed his tenderfoot, and a court of honour was held afterwards.
