Accidental Death
FALIi FROM DISTRIBUTOR Purely accidental circumstances were revealed at tlio inquest yesterday into the cause of the death of Percival Penley Drake, aged '64, who died at the Palmerston North Hospital on April 23 as the result of injuries received while assisting his two grandsons with topdressing on a farm at Shannon on April 15. H. P. Adams, a farm labourer employed by his brother at Shannon, gave evidence that on April 15 he and deceased assisted his brother topdressing on a farm. Deceased was on the tray of a lorry handing bags of lime to witness, who was standing on the platform of a distributor. Deceased stepped on to the distribution, overbalanced and fell to the ground. The lorry was still moving slowly and the left wheel of the distributor passed over deceased’s body. The lorry was stopped immediately. C. J. Adams, brother of the previous witness, who was driving the lorry, gave corroborative evidence.
T. O. Gilbert, medical practioner at the Palmerston North Hospital, said deceased died on April 23 from respiratory paralysis following fracture of the spine. A verdict consistent with the medical evidence was entered by the cononer, Mr A. J. Graham.
