Awapuni Track Work

CATALOGUE PLEASES OVER PIVE FURLONGS MELBOURNE CUP WINNER PULLED UP SOUND With the Egmont meeting next week there was a fair amount of fast work at Awapuni yesterday morning, but none of the trials was serious enough to suggest that the horses had been sent out with the idea of breaking the watches. The course proper, with the flags wide out, was available, and the going was dead. The feature items were a five-furlong flutter by the Melbourne Cup winner, Catalogue, and a schooling bout over three fences by Erebus, who has not been asked to jump since his spill at Feilding in the spring. Catalogue, who has not been galloped since his mishap in January, when he trod on an area affected by a live wire which had been brought down in a storm the previous night, still has nn ugly knee, but in his work ho has indicated that the injury is only superficial. Yesterday he was ridden by Alan McDonald and he was allowed to bowl along over five furlongs. For two of them lie was kept to even time, but he was going faster over the last bit to run the last three in 41 2-ssec. He finished well and he took some pulling up. Ho claims no immediate engagements, but Manawatu is just over three weeks away and it would not take more than a couple of gallops for Catalogue to reach top form. Erebus (I. Rohloff) was schooled over three fences and, to indicate the merit of his performance, : t is sufficient to say that the fences made no appreciable difference to his pace. Erebus is a rare jumper. Girl Pat, with a light boy up, was not under pressure in running five in 1.0 3-5, the last three in 40 3-5. Seyfried (W. Jenkins) and Golden Ridge (J. Lewis) finished together at the end of six in 1.24, and Brazil (R. Ireland) was a couple of lengths in front of Colonel Bogey (W. J. Broughton) at the end of six in 1.24. Wananga, ridden by N. Voitre, was going along easily at the end of seven, the last three taking 44 2-5. Voitre is now training Wananga. An interesting trial was that of Old Bill (M. Bowden) and Corroboree (E. Stewart). They were not after time, but they moved without effort and they wero timed to run five in 1.12, the last three in 42. Old Bill looks a picture and so does Corroboree, who is worth remembering for future engagements. Cuisinier (Broughton) and Aurora’s Star (Dye) were kept together in a flutter over six which took 1.26, and Diamond Cutter (J. Chaplin) and Verey Lights (Tattersall) wero on the bit at the end of seven, the last five of which took 1.11, and the last three 42. Taumau (McDonald) ran six, the last five in 1.12 3-5, and Conveyer (Ireland) and Power Chief (Broughton) were together at the end of six in 1.26, the last three in 42 3-5. Conveyer has built up a bit during the last three months and Power Chief, who looks to be in great order, should not need much work to get him into racing trim. Tidewaiter (Lewis) and Classform (Tattersall) were given a pipe-opener over five and, after taking 29 for the first two, they came home in 40 to complete in 1.9. Tidewaiter and Classform have not galloped for some time, but it would not take much time to get them ready for racing. W. J. Broughton, who will ride at the Egmont meeting, has been engaged for Fiancee, Galteemore, Hinerawe and Homily. AUCKLAND TROTS Sustenance and Tagua, limit, are not included in the acceptors for the April Handicap at the Auckland Trotting Club’s meeting to be held on April 29. FROM VARIOUS SOURCES The Brisbane Amateur Turf Club is offering £3150 as the stake for its Newmarket Handicap to be run at the July meeting. The stake is more than for any other six furlong handicap in Australia. W. Pine is educating a yearling colt by The Greek from Sleeping Beauty, the dam of Palm. Another likely youngster at Awapuni is a filly by Thomond from Warzone. ITALIAN JOCKEY RIDES 2000 WINNERS Italy has its champion jockey in V. Caprioli, who headed the winning list in that country on eleven occasions. At Naples in February last ho rode his 2000th winner. When Caprioli commenced riding in 1916 ho finished the season with three wins. RACING lIXTURES April 27, 29. —South Canterbury J.C. April 29, May I.—Nelson J.C. May 4, 6.—Egmont R.C.
