£B6 GAINED BY FALSE PRETENCES

Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, April 24. Four charges ot obtaining £BS at Rotorua between February 20 and March 13 by false pretences were admitted in the Police Court by Harry Manning, aged 38, a labourer. In a statement to the police he said that while working at a hostel he met a young woman employed as a cook. They kept company for several months and agreed to marry. He obtained from her four sums of money for the purchase of a business in Auckland. Actually the business did not exist end lie spent the money in drink. Detective-Sergeant Nalder said that the conduct was despicable, the money having all been spent on drink.

On each of two charges Mr C. R. Orr-Walker, S.M., passed a sentence of six months imprisonment, to be cumulative, and on another charge gave probation for three years, conditional on the refund of the whole of the money advanced.
