Old Girls Learn of Present Day College
Expressing her pleasure in attending the annual meeting of tho Palmerston North branch of the Wanganui College Old Girls’ Association on Friday last, Miss E. Baker, M.A., the new principal, conveyed greetings from Mrs. Wickham. She said no old girl was a stranger, as each time of going into the assembly hall, the generous gift of old girls, was a bond drawing them closer. Miss Baker’s audience was interested to learn of the new wing and the open-air classrooms, tho two new artesian water drinking fountains, the prefects’ study and classrooms glistening with new paint, but sad to hear of the demise of
“Horace.” Miss Baker told of the pupils’ efforts reorganise the library and stressed tho great importance and necessity for reading correctly and the right books. Learning to read correctly gave a sense of appreciation and education continued beyond school days, which was important in the moulding of future citizens. The essentials for good citizenship were courage, cheerfulness and courtesy, with a sense of repose. Miss Baker deprecated the speed at which most jieople lived to-day and urged those present to seek that repose and so instil a sense of relaxation of body and mind. This could bo achieved by setting aside even a quarter of an hour daily to spend in solitude for beautiful thoughts and pictures of the many beauties of this earth, and so, with right thinking, would come peace.
Miss Baker accepted with pleasure the office of patroness and extended an invitation to all old girls to visit the college. Those present were Mesdames K. Boss, G. Dixon, H. Mylroi, W. G. Shannon, P. Johnston, A. Coup, J. Beard, E. Bishop and A. Smith, Misses E. Aitken (representing the Parents’ Association), F. Anderson, K. and N. Coup, M. Will, N. Whitta, M. Millar, M. MacLeod and J. Summerell.
There were apologies from Mesdames Adcock, Haddon, Law, Simpson, Ornberg, Barrie, Buchanan, Collinson, Cook, Stancell, Beale, Misses N. Master, Meade, N. Grant, J. B. McLeod, J. CaverhiU, A. Wingate, G. Linklater, F. and J. MacLeod, G. Meuli and M. Belk.
