WINTER SPORTS

FASHIONS IN AMERICA Knitted hoods are perhaps the most popular head covering, for they are becoming, romantic and warm, says a writer in the Christian Science Monitor describing American winter sports fashions. Because they are presented in a number of shapes, such as peaks, rabbits’ ears and halo-rims, and knit in a variety of colours and stitches with decorative embroidery superimposed, one’s repertory can be almost unlimited. Calots and kerchiefs are alternatives and bright-coloured snoods protect the up-swept hair. Patterning on sweaters is slightly different this season, for it derives from Swiss and Scandinavian sources more often than from Tyrolean. One sees the Edelweis and the Alpine violet, while Norwegian knitting and embroidery are more vertical and slim-

ming than the Tyrolean, and make use of other motifs. In choosing ski suits think first of the trousers. The “instructer” type, called also “down hill” and “Norwegian” pants, now occupies a commanding position. These trousers are slim in the hips and taper at the ankles, where they are held by an elastic band and in some cases by a strap that passes firmly under the foot. They are cut with high-rising waists, which afford room for bending and crouching. Regulation pants with bloused bottoms are, however, preferred by some skiers, but plus-fours are not popular in America this season because it has been found that the long wool stockings which they necessitate pick up too much snow. Wool gabardine is a practical material, for it is tightly woven and wind proof. Wool, jersey corded wool and twill, the latter sometimes interwoven with an elastic thread are also well sponsored. Ice-blue, navy, black, dark
