Anzac Talk Given PREPARATIONS FOR WINTER RECREATIONS The monthly meeting of the Woodville School Committee was held on Monday evening. There were present Messrs. R. R. Johnston (chairman), H. J. McPeak, R. J. Peebles, L. Williams, L. J. Whittington, E. J. Harding, A. M. Pickering (secretary) and J. S. McBean (headmaster;. An apology was receivod from Rev. B. P. Williams. Advice was received from the Hawke’s Bay Education Board that it was prepared to make a grant of £7 8s towards the purchase of books for class libraries, subject to the list of proposed purchases being approved by tho inspectors. This is au amount similar to that granted last year. The proceeds of the recent stret stall have also been allotted for this purpose. The report of the headmaster, Mr, J. S. Mcßean, read as follows: “Roll: 142 boys, 132 girls, total 274; percentage attendance 94. The attendance is fairly good, although a number of children have had a form of ‘flu’ which seems to be going round tho district.

“Staff changes: Miss Wcbley was transferred to Dunuevirke and Mr. Lyons has taken up relieving duty in place of Mrs. Langdon, whp has left on six months’ leave of absence. Mr. K. D. L. Irwin commenced duty on April 3. “Inspectors’ visit: Inspectors Henry, Lewis and Lomas visited tho school on April 12, 13 and 14. Mr. Learning, secondary schools inspector, visited the secondary department on April 24. He strongly advised an endeavour to increase tho secondary roll, as this would increase the efficiency of this department and give the secondary assi-'tant a chance to do more for tho pupils. “On the morning of April 24 tho staff and pupils had tho pleasure of listening to a splendid address ou Anzac by Major y. Hayes, of Wellington. AIL tho pupils listened with great interest to the speaker. Mr. Johnston, Mr. D. Keay and Captain L. H. Jones were iu attendance. At tho conclusion Mr. Johnston thanked Major Hayes for his fine address. Our thanks are also due to Mr. Keay, who was instrumental in obtaining Major Hayes for Woodville.

“The school requires about six waste paper baskets.” It was decided to make inquiries from the New Zealand Institute for the Blind for the waste baskets required. It was suggested that the annual road races for the cups presented by Mr. J. Sullivan should be held on May 5, the day on which the school breaks up. Arrangements were left in the hands of Mr. E. J. Harding. The purchase of sports gear was left in the hands of the chairman and the headmaster.

The Woodville Old Girls’ Basketball Club was granted the use of the school grounds during tho winter, subject to the conditions that nothing be removed therefrom and that the grounds are left tidy.
