A Leopard Changes Its Spots
MISCHA AUER USED TO BE lIORROR-MAN (Meteor: Screening Friday.) Mischa Auer, featured in “In Society,” used to be a horror-man. The recent revival of hair-raising, night-mare inducing pictures brought out the fact that before he became known as a great comedian, Mischa played roles similar to those enacted by Bela Liigosi, Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre. Then Mischa went to a party. As a relief from the tedium of dark dastardly, he imitated a monkey. The guests roared with laughter. “I can use you in my next picture, ’ ’ one of the guests told Mischa. Auer had visions of another picture reeking with violent villany. The man was Gregory LaCava and the picture was “My Man God frey.” It made a comedian out of him, and he hasn’t sneered a sneer nor sliced a throat since.
Mischa will be seen in another oi his laugh-provoking roles, that of the eccentric physician with Universal’s Little Tough Guys “In Society.” lie is featured in a cast which includes Edward Everett Horton, Mary Boland, Helen Parrish, Frankie Thomas, Jackie Searl and Universal’s new group of boy players known as The Little Tough Guys.
