Otaki Shield Winner Dead The death occurred at the Royal Infirmary, Aberdeen, last month of Mr. William James Davidson Anderson, aged 21, a young Scot, who was known to many New Zealanders as the first winner of the Otaki Shield in 1937. Mr. Anderson, who was a first-year medical student at Aberdeen University, had a splendid academic record and was one of the most promising Rugby players in the North of Scotland. The Otaki Shield commemorates the historic fight between the New Zealand Shipping Company’s armed merchantman Otaki. commanded by Captain. A. Bisset Smith, V.C., and the German raider! Moewe in 1917. A shield was presented I to Robert Gordon’s College, Aberdeen, by Captain Smith’s relations to be awarded annually to the most outstand ing boy in scholarship, athletics, leadership and general qualiiicaticns. It was supplemented by the New Zealand Shipping Company with the free return trip to New Zealand.
