A quinnat salmon of extraordinary size, possibly a record for New Zealand rivers, has been taken to the Canterbury Museum for mounting. Caught in the Rakaia River by Mr. W. Cromie, it weighed approximately 531 b. It is a male fish, 41in. long and llin deep. Salmon of approximately equal weight have been caught before, but these are exceptional. Mr. A. E. Hefford, Chief Inspector of Fisheries, states in an article in this year’s New Zealand Year-Book that several quinnat salmon of more than 401 b. have been caught with rod and line, and one weighing 521 b.
