Following In Father's Footsteps

18-year-old Leads For King’s Prize ASHHURST COMPETITOR CLOSE Per Press Association. TRENTHAM, Last Night. Firing over tho short ranges in tho series of matches for tho championship bolt was completed at tho Nationul Rifle Alecting at Trcntham to-day. When the shooting ceased for the day B. Masefield, of the Nelson-Aiarlborough Regiment of Alountod Rifles, was leading for the King’s Prize with an aggregate score of 2SS out of a possiblo of 300. Ho is 18 years of age and a son of Captain W. N. Alasefield who has won the King’s Prize three times. This is tho second national meeting Alaseiield juuior has attended, his first being as a college student two ago. One point behind Alasefield is F. Bowes, of the Auckland City Rifle Club and the winner of tho belt in 1935. Five marksmen, A. R. Symons (Ashhurst), G. G. Kelly (Karon), H. Harries (Christchurch), I. J. Spry (Auckland) and D. G. Wyllie (West Taieri) have the next best scores, oach with 286. Tho marksmen will move back to the long ranges to-morrow for the last three matches in tho sories before the final match for the King’s Prize. Good scores were registered by the first details to go down ut the mOunds for the Wellington match, ten rounds at 500 and 000 yards, tho firing of which took all the morning. The 500 yards range is one of tho easiest to shoot bver by reason of tho fact that tho target for this distance is dimensioned for use at 600 yards and in tho early morning calm possibles were plentiful. Later a fishtail breeze twisted in ana out down tho range, the Indicator pennants blowing alternatively from right and left. The light was perfect, but the wind freshened in the afternoon and though five competitors put on the possible in one range, the Otago match, ten rounds at 300 yards, there were a lot of windage errors by marksmen who found it difficult to follow the rapid changes. Steps were taken to-day to have the rulo requiring a minimum trigger pull of fivo pounds rigidly enforced and several competitors wero asked to submit their rifles for tost. Competitors using rifles with a puli below the stipulated minimum were required to up weight. Results:— Wellington Match. (Ten rounds at 500 and GOO yards.) £5; F. Bowes (Auckland City) 99. £4: F. J.
