Ashhurst
LABOUR PARTY MEETING The annual meeting of the Ashhurst branch of the New Zealand Labour Party was held last week. Thirty-one members attended. Among those present were Mr. Bowater, the district organiser, and Mrs. Bowater. Mr. P. Wilkin, president, gave a short address, and Mr. J. Flowers, lion, secretary, then read the financial statement. The grand total realised was £lO7 Is 4jjd. Full details were given regarding disbursements and the present credit balance stands at £lO 11s 9id. Mr. Bowater then gave a short address and this was followed by the election of officers for the coming year as follows: President, Mr. P. Wilkin; vice-president, Mr. M. Faulk; hon. secretary, Mr. J. Flowers (re-elected). These three gentlemen made a hardworking, enthusiastic team and their re-election to office was loudly applauded. The election of other officers was then proceeded with, Mr. Wm. Roaclie being appointed as delegate to the annual conference to be held at Wellington next Easter. An investigation committee was formed. This is a new departure and the committee was formed wtih the idea of helping to right any injustice which may bo brought to its notice and also with the idea of stamping out any rumours which it may encounter. This committee is to work confidentially and its personnel is as follows: Messrs. P. Wilkin, J. Flowers, M. Faulk, L. Haekett and Wm. Roache.
Tho next item concerned arrangements for the Labour dances which, with euchre, will bo held monthly the same as last year and always on Saturday nights with the exception of the grand opening night fixed for St. Patrick’s night, March 17. Mr. Bowater gave the meeting considerable information about the Labour dalies and replied to many questions put forward by different members. Mr. Bowater was thanked for his speech.
