Women’s Institutes

MILSON The Milson Women’s Institute held their annual meeting and election of officers on Wednesday afternoon, there being a good attendance and Mrs Murphy presided and extended a welcome to all present. Tho secretary (Miss E. Prentice) read the report, , which was adopted. Mrs Old (treasur- ■ er), presented the balance-sheet and showed the Institute to bo in a good financial position. Nino new members r were enrolled, theso being Mesdames l Hall, Butcher, Wilkin, Hamblin, Maxham, Jones, Honour, Eowsem and Mangham. Before the election of . Officers Miss Murphy thanked the outi going committee and all those who had helped to make the year a success. Mesdames Fraser and Vernon acted as - scrutineus. Mrs F. Murphy was unanii mously elected president. The com- , mittee consists of Mesdames Casey, Cutten, McKenzie, Wood, White, Olds, Rabone, Gore, Whittaker and Misses . Prentice and Terry. The conveners of j the circles are; —Arts and crafts, Mrs . Renwick; singing, Mrs Whittaker; garL den, Mrs McKenzie; folk dancing, Mrs Brookfield; drama, Miss Terry; link correspondent, Mrs Gore; and secretary j for the hall committee, Mrs Wood. The 1 arts and crafts circle monthly meeting ■ will be held on the second Wednesday 5 of each month instead of the Wednesday as at present. A pleasant interlude took place during the afternoon when 1 Mrs Murphy called on Mrs Dymock ) (who is leaving early next month to at- • tend the Pan-Pacific conference) to acI cept good wishes and a basket of ever L lasting flowers from her fellow members. Mrs Dymock thanked members and said she was pleased to be going ‘ and would look forward to returning to 1 the meeting. She hoped to be able to bring back quite a few good ideas. The ’ Longburn group meeting is to be held the fourth Thursday of this month and a farewell is being given to the Dele- | gates who are going to the conference. Mesdames Gore and Brookfield were appointed the group delegates for this year. The new committee meet next week to elect their secretary and treasurer. Final arrangements are well in hand for the annual flour show which is being held at the week-end. Tho prizes for tho point’s prize for tho year’s work were presented, these L being;—Mat work, Mrs Wood; arts and ’ crafts, Mrs Cutten; best bloom, Mrs ' James. A bring and buy stall was held. ' Mrs Pike. A competition was won by [ The winner of the best parcel was 1 Mrs Whittaker. Tho hostesses for the J -April meeting will be Mesdames Bed- • ingfield, Coleman, Cutten, Chalk, Chapman, E. W, Drake, Downing, Christie, and Dinnan. The annual report stated: The year just concluded has been a very 5 active one. 32 new members have been enrolled while several members have tendered their resignations througn ■ leaving the district. Tho number of financial members is now 135. Demonstrations have been given in sugar-bag and mats, pine needle work, baskets, hair-setting, presentation box, plate-gar- ' leather work and talks on corsets and travels. All meetings have been well attended. Fifteen competitions ( have been held during the year and although the entries have shown an increase, the committee would still like to see more entries. Good progress has been shown by the circles, the report of which have been given monthly by the conveners. The singing and folk dancing circles have not had such a strenuous year as usual, owing to their festival not being held. The drama circle entered an all-woman team in the drama festival and wero successful in . gaining second place. The garden circle has visited gardens and plans to hold a flower show on March 4. Garden notes have been given at the meeting by Mrs Gore. The circle entered a display of fruit, flowers and vegetables for members of garden circles at tho horticultural show but were not successful in gaining a place. The Institute entered two entries in the Manawatu show, one in the preserves and one in the fifteen assorted articles, two of our members gaining prizes with their handcraft exhibits. An entry was also sent to the Feilding show in the miniature garden display. Delegates during the year were:—Dominion conference, Miss Terry; half-yearly council meeting, Mesdames Brookfield and Whittaker; annual council meeting, Mesdames Graham and Brookfield; group meetings, Mesdames Hammond and Bulmer. Wo were very successful in linking up with tho Isle of Wight Institute and interesting letters have been read to and from the link correspondent, Mrs Gore. A photo of the members was taken to send home to the link. A photo album is to be filled with snaps and sent home with Mrs Dymock when she goes to tho PanPacific conference. The birthday afternoon took the form of a social afternoon and was well attended by members and friends. Early iu the year Mlsa Terry donated a section to the Institute to build a hall and members have been working hard for this object. Fortnightly dances have been held towards the building fun. In p l ac o of the birthday evening a bazaar was held in aid of this fund and exceeded all expectations. The children »s party was not held this year but a picnic was held at the Awapuni racecourse. Although the attendance was not large an enjoyable time was spent. Special thanks aro due to Mr Garner, (auditor), Mrs Templeton for the donation of £25 to the hall fund and to all members who helped with i donations, and the bazaar, to tho [hostesses who have so willingly carried out their duties, and to tho men who have helped at the various functions we have held during the year.”
