MAGISTRATE’S COURT PROCEEDINGS Mr. H. P. Lawry, S.M., presided at the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court in Palmerston North yesterday. L. J. C. Edlin was fined £1 with 10s costs for casting offensive matter on a footpath. G. A. Scadden, who drove a car over a railway line while the warning bells were ringing, was fined £3 with 10a costs. E. R. Bavin was i>rosecuted for driving a car at a dangerous speed at Awahuri and fined £3 with 10s costs. L. Loveridge, on a similar charge, was fined £5 with 10s costs. Inspector Ilartigan stated' that defendant drove on New Year's Eve from Wanganui to Palmerston North at such a speed that ho had to travel 12 miles to overtake him. There was a lot of traffic on the road and through Sanson, a restricted area, there had been no slackening fo pace. The inspector added it was one of the worst cases oi speeding that had come to his notice. D. Keiliher, who drove a car with a defective headlamp, was ordered to pay costs 10s. Laurence C. De Vantier, a motor driver, aged 23 years, was remanded till Friday on two charges of negligently driving a motor truck in Taonui Mtreet on February 23 while in a state of intoxication, and thereby causing the deaths of G. H. W. Over and A. F. Taylor. There was a third charge oi driving the lorry while in a state ol intoxication. On this he was also remanded till Friday. Peter Henry Anderson, labourer, and \ ictoria Leslie Brodie, motor driver, were found guilty of disorderly behaviour in a Palmerston North restaurant, the former being lined £2 with 21s costs and the latter £1 with 21s :osts.
