Girl Guide Notes

Vfi have to congratulate Beverley Stevens on winning the senior championship at the swimming sports last Saturday—this is especially happy for Beverley as it will be her last year as a Guide, and I know that everybody will be pleased with her. The junior champ, went to June Barkwith, again with Pat Snelling as a very close runner up, only one point behind. \N hat a pity they could not have tied. The bowl is once more in Takaro’s possession. Congratu-’ lations to all those who helped to keep up their company’s standard. The National Fitness Campaign bo gins to-day and Guides are joining with The Scouts in Church Parades on Sunday, when every Guide will attend her own church in uniform, and possibly with her colours. One from each company will go to each church so that each church will have a colour party. Guides are to meet at their own church and go in together behind the Scouts. Next Thursday Guides are to form one section in the folk dancing display, in the evening at the showgrounds, so we are expecting them to make a good showing.

Wednesday of next week'is Thinking ! Day, when we especially think of the \ Chief Scout and Chief Guide, who arc; having their birthdays on that day, and who gave to us Bcouting and Guiding that we might all enjoy it. We think, too, of our fellow Girl Scouts and Girl Guides in other parts of the country and in other parts of the world. At Foxlease, the training school in England, and at Waddow, in the North of England, at Our Chalet, the International Guide Home in Switzerland, there will be parties of Guides and Girl Scoots from many different countries, all working and playing together in friendship. We want to spread that spirit among our own companies and friends, too, so that we are one great band of happy, helpful Guides, working together, no matter what our race, creed or customs, for the peace of the world. On Thinking Day we all give one penny to help on the work of the world bureau, which is the link between all Girl Guides and Girl Scouts of the world. Have you a penfriend so that you can learn of the doings of girls in other lands and hear what they have in their company meetings! If not, then why not ask captain if you cannot have one! Dominion headquarters will always be pleased to put you in touch with Guide people in other countries. Make a resolution this Thinking Day that you will learn more about your fellow Guides in other lands, and so spread the spirit of friendship. Above all, do not forget to be thankful to the Chiefs for the great game of Guiding and to all those people who work to make your company meetings so happy. Other companies would like to hear how you all celebrate Thinking Day so write in to the Guide Notes and tell us all about the evening. St. Paul’s (sth. Patrol Company.)

We extend our congratulations to Takaro on annexing the rose bowl and junior championship cup at the swiming sports. Needless to say we are proud of Beverley Stevens who gained for us the senior cup.

Last meeting captain had re-arranged our patrols and in patrol time we discussed plans for the year. At . camp firo the songs learnt at camp are very popular and those who were unable to go are learning the songs and enjoying them.

As “Thinking Day” falls on our usual Guide meeting night we are hop ing to have an International programme and will tell you about it next week.

Halcombe. Dear Hub,—Now that we are back at school and holidays are over I am .iu°* writing you a short note. I enjoyed my holidays very much and had lots of fun. I came top of my class in the examinations and am now in standard one. 1 have not received my badge. I cannot do the skill test so will close with best wishes to all the Cogs.

Rose Red. I am glad you had a good holiday, Rose Red, and that you did so well at school. I wonder where that badge strayed! Send your full address and I will post you another. Kimbolton. Dear Hub, —I have been for a month’s holiday. I learnt to ride a bicvcle while I was on holiday. I went to a picture called “Breaking the Ice.’’ I have to go to the dental clinic on the 24th. We have a lot of pretty flowers out. We are having our school jubilee in March. Pink Pearl. What did you feel like when you j found you could really keep going on a bicycle ? You were fortunate to have four weeks ’ holiday and now I suppose ! you are eagerly awaiting the jubilee. Kimbolton. Dear Hub, —How are you feeling after your holiday! I had a very enjoyable holiday. On January 20 I had !my tonsils out, I was in hospital for a I week. We have been for a swim every | day since we started school. We are practising for the Cheltenham sports at school which are to be held on the 25th. Remembrance. I am only just planning my holiday, Remembrance. I am glad you had a good time but sorry to learn of the spell in hospital. Good luck for the sports. Rongotea. Dear Hub, —We have been swimming and I enjoy it very much. But I think the swimming period is too short in the country, for soon the rain comes and the river rises and it is no longer safe for us. Oh, you lucky town boys with your swimming baths and instructors! I am trying hard to swim well as I am not allowed to go out in a sailing boat until I can swim. When I see a yacht with sails set, riding the foaming

waves, wouldn’t I just love to be aboard! Tarawera Scout. I have that same feeling about the yacht, Tarawera Scout, but it is a very wise precaution for you to learn to swim well before you take up such a dangerous pastime. Farewanui. Dear Hub, —May I join your happy band of Cogs! I am eight years old and in standard 2. Would you please find me a pen-name if “Pinky” is taken? i am sending threepence for a badge. Nyra Tattle. Welcome to the Big Family, Nyra, and Pinky you may be. I hope you wili enjoy writing to the Page. Foxton. Dear Hub, —I’m sorry I missed last week’s Page. I read Chirp’s letter and I hope she enjoyed her holiday as much as I enjoyed mine. I had a lovely time at Christmas. I got a wobbly duck amongst my presents and I had fun playing with it too. On Boxing Day, which is my birthday, I went up to Palmerston North to see my Grandma and she took me out to Bunnythorpe and we had a happy day over there. I also went to the Marton races with my brother. Isn’t it fun watching the horses go round the course and is exciting to see which one will win. Do you ever go to races, Hub? Well, I must bring to an end as it Is now time for bed. Ernie. It is good to know that so many of the Cogs have enjoyed their holidays. That is as it should be. I have been to races, Ernie, but not when I was as young as you are.
