Sandon
' From Our Own Correspondent. Close on one hundred people attended I the political meeting held at Sandon on I ’ Monday evening when the Hon. J. G.' j 1 Cobbe, Nationalist candidate for Mana- 1 • watu, delivered his opening address in t Sandon. The speaker pointed out that the ' coming election was one of the most im- ' 3 portant held in the history of New Zea--2 land. The issue was definitely one of ‘ socialism versus freedom, and State own-j ership against private enterprise. Mr 1 Cobbe pointed out that the Government ' . of to-day was not free to act on their own 1 - initiative, as their policy was dictated by - the trades hall and Easter conference. 1 . This fact was borne out by the manifesto ■ Issued on behalf of the Labour Party < 1 when it was signed by the Prime Minis . * 1 ter and the president and secretary of the 1 i' Labour Party, the latter two gentlemen ! : i being prominent members of the trades . J . hall. Following a criticism of the La- j 1 £ hour Party’s policy during the past three \' © years, the candidate outlined the main j : e planks •of the National Party’s policy. I ? Although the speaker was subjected to -a ’ - • fair amount of interjections from a smal. > / section of those present during the even--3 ing, he had quick replies for them. Fol- 1 3 lowing the address, Mr Cobbe answered J a number of questions. A motion ol thanks and confidence in the candidate J was moved by Mr «f. H. Perrett and seci onded by Mr C. L. Grace. Mr Perrett 1 • said that Mr Cobbe was well known i throughout the electorate as an able and J successful man and he felt sure he would j bo returned to represent Manawatu foi the next three years. (Applause.) Tht motion was carried unanimously.
