Awake, New Zealand!
(To the Editor.) My angel ranged these Southern Isl«ea And then beheld Satanic wiles, The enslavement of a supine race That knew but rocked not the disgrace, Of fetters which shall bind it fast Until too late it wake at last. And what the chains my angel saw? The spiritual bonds of law On law, until 'twere mockery To name the name of Liberty; And fond illusions 'fore the eyes Till Truth were but a dim surmise. My angel saw the woeful end To which these base designs must trend, That dreams which must sustain man’s soul, Be banished lest they wreck the goal: The enslaved body, slavish mind To all but Communism blind. Mr angel saw how well they planned To bind these chains about this land, With link on link so gently laid, No reason first to be afraid; But as the manacles grew great What groans arose within the State. And seeing this my angel wept To think that this (Air country slept, Like Gulliver in Lilliput, To wake in bonds it could not cut. Bo now I cry, “New Zealand wake Ere they this land a prison make! " “PATRIOT."
