HEAVY TRAFFIC HANDLED AT PALMERSTON NORTH Passenger journeys recorded at the Palmerston North railway station during the tinaneial year 1937-3 S totalled 1811469. of which 11,736 were first-class and 170,433 second-class. Passenger revenue totalled £44,215, while luggage, parcels and mails yielded £4034. Goods freight brought in £67,040 and miscellaneous charges £632, making the ir >tal revenue £155,921. The figures are contained in the Railways Statement presented to Parliament on Friday. Cattle and calves handled in outward traffic numbered 2933, and sheep and pigs 28,801. Some 139,300 superficial feet of timber were dealt with, and 48,349 tons of other goods. Inward traffic consisted of 13,121 cattle and calves, 99,862 sheep and pigs, 7,519,500 superficial feet of timber and 88,443 tons of other goods. The Levin station recorded 45,284 passengers, bringing a revenue of £7561 which, with goods and other traffic, was brought up to a total of £14,941.

Thero were 35,970 passengers at Shannon and they brought £3267 in revenue. Goods traffic made the total £11,891. Though no passengers were handled on the Foxton line, it produced £5344 in freight charges. 'There were 12,297 passengers at Longburn, the revenue from this source boiag £446, but heavy goods revenue brought the total up to £26,892. The Ashhurst station handled 7924 passengers, earning a revenue of £6ll, which goods freight brought to a total of £4685. Woodville passengers numbered 26,685, and the revenue from, this eourco was £3663, goods traffic bringing the total up to £24,206. There were 603 S passengers recorded at the Pahiatua station, revenue from fares being £1617. Goods charges brought the total earnings to £10,082.
