Work in County Ridings

ENGINEER'S REPORT FOR JULY The following report of works in the ridings in the Woodville County was presented yesterday at the monthly meeting of the Woodville County Council by tho engineer, Mr. W. J. Hawkes:—

Woodville Riding.—Conduits, Foley's, Pinfold, Oxford, Woodland and Bush Mill roads were graded and metal repairs attended to where necessary. Surface repairs attended to where necessary. Surfaco repairs were attended to on Whariti aud new pipe culverts put in. Surfacing and water tables were attended to on Foley's and Beagley’s roads. Side drains were cleaned on Upper Pinfold road. Manga-atua Riding.—Grading was done on Ormond's, Troup, Range, Bluff, Jackson's, Priest's and Bowman's roads and metal repairs carried out where necessary. Slips were removed and water tables cleaned on Bluff road. A 12-inch pipe culvert was put in on Bloomfield's road to replace an old timber culvert; iulet and outlet drains were cleaned; a 9in. pipe culvert was put in on Bluff road near the junction of the State highway; drains were cleaned.

Kumeroa Riding.—River and Township roads were graded. Metal patching was done on Otauhao, Totara, River and Township roads. A new pipe culvert was put in on Pattison's Hill to replace an old wooden structure. A half bridge construction over an old washout on tho same hill has been removed and tho sharp corner adjacent has been cut back, material being utilised to fill iu the washout. Slips were removed on Cemetery road. An old box culvert on Otawhao road near Kemp's (under 20ft. of filling) will bo replaced with a waterdrivo when tho weather is suitable. Maharahara riding.—Grading was done on Sturdee, R 033, Grahamc’s, Hereson 's roads. Metal repairs were attendtaungu, Oriugi, Gaisford's and Jackson's roads. Metal repairs wero attended to where required. Side drains on Sturdee road were cleaned. Metal was removed from the channel of the Raparapawai stream at Gaisford's road bridge. Watertabl.es on Gaisford's and Grahamo's roads were cleaned. Groyne protection work was done at the approach to Charmly’s bridge on Grange's road. General.—The plantation reserves at Pinfold road and Ngawapurua were cleaned up. Fencing authorised at a reserve in Kumeroa was carried out by the lessee. Main Highways. Woodville-Hopelands, No. 6.—This road was graded and metal repairs carried out when necessary; slips were removed and water-tables cleaned. Bridge decking repairs were attended to. Woodville-Tamaki, Nos. 7 and 8.Grading was done throughout and metal repairs attended to where necessary. Culverts were repaired, side drains and water-tables were cleaned. Freelands Highway, No. 9. —This road was graded and metal repairs attended to when aud where necessary. Culverts wero lowered to give increased drainage. Other culverts were lengthened. Bridge approaches were repaired. Cr. Cattanach voiced appreciation of the chairman's recent visit to Napier to interview the Public Works engineer with regard to the main roads. He said that tho work had started very promptly and was going to be very satisfactory. i ‘ Tho ratepayers are satisfied and this outcome again demonstrates Mr. Grainger's ability and suitability as chairman, of the council," added Cr. Cattanach.

The chairman thanked Cr. Cattanach for his remarks and suggested that Mr. Diuney, tho Palmerston North engineer, bo written to, thanking him for his prompt attention. Ngawapurua Bridge,

Cr. Peebles drew attention to the laying of longitudinal decking on the Ngawapurua bridge, which he said should be tarred and sanded to make provision for travelling stock, as, in his experience, he said, this type of planking was more dangerous in wet or frosty weather.

The chairman agreed that Cr. Peebles had raised a very sensible complaint, and it was decided to refer the matter to the authorities.

The chairman congratulated the engineer upon the state of the back roads in the county, and Cr. Galloway agreed that they wero a credit.

Mr. T. S. R. Scbaw was appointed county ranger.
