No Suspicion of Foul Play

DEATH OF MAORI CHILD INATESTIGATED For Press Association. GISBORNE, Last Night. Investigations by Detective Belton at AVaihau Bay in connection with the death of the two-year-old Maori female child, concerning which rumours of a serious nature had gained currency, revealed nothing upon which a suspicion of foul play could be founded, stated Police Inspector G. B. Edwards this afternoon. An inspection of the remains of the child and an interrogation of the persons in whose chargo the child had been placed prior to her death were the first steps in the investigation, said the Inspector. Interviews with a number of natives of the district strengthened the evidence in support of the infant’s death having occurred from natural causes.

In their statements to Detective Belton the mother and adopted motner had given apparently satisfactory accounts of their treatment of the child. These statements were being checked up, as also were other details of informatioi associated with the case.
