Women’s Institute

NEWBURY Tho July meeting was fairly well attended and a very happy afternoon was spent. Mrs. E. A. Shaw (president) presided and welcomed visitors and members. Apologies for absence weto received from Mesdames M. Hansen, B. Purton, J. Macauley, J. Cheethain, W. Penberthy and J. Lancaster. An invitation from the Kairanga Institute to attend their birthday party in August was received. Tho competition for a plate of shortbread resulted: Mrs. M. Baker 1, Mrs. E. Shaw 2, Mrs. F. Verry 3. Best bloom: Mrs. E. Shaw 1, Mrs. 'M. Baker 2, Mrs. F. Verry 3. Mrs. J. Lancaster kindly donated the prizo for tho shortbread. Mesdames Child and Renwick, from the Milson Institute, gave most interesting and instructive demonstrations on brass and pewter ware, having scvoral finished articles on exhibition. Mrs. Shaw moved a voto of thanks to tho visitors. Mesdames Child and Rcnwick judged tho competitions for shortbread and best bloom. The competition for August will be a jar of home-made marmalade and best bloom, j Afternoon tea was served by Mesdames ! F. Verry and N. Wood. The hostesses I for next meeting will be Mesdames Bur- ; berry and Baker. FOXTON Tho monthly meeting was presided over by Mrs. Brown. Tho resignation Of Mrs. Riddell was received with regret and a welcome was extended to two new members, Mrs. Wishart and Miss G. Huntley. It was decided that the institute birthday party be held m the Masonic hall on Tuesday, August 10. The function will bo in the form of a social and dance, members to take two plates and pay 6d, husbands and friends 13. Members of the Shannon Institute were present, and entertained local members with an interesting programme. A demonstration of making posies from sweets was given by Mrs, Hely, whilo Mrs. Roberts gave a very interesting talk on gardening. Miss Ames contributed much-appreciated * solos. The hostesses had a busy time serving afternoon tea.
