Obituary
MR. A. J. GIBBS The news of the sudaen death of Mr. Albert J. Gibbs whieh occurred on Monday, the 25th July, will have been received with great sorrow by his numerous relatives and friends in the Manawatu. At the time of his death Mr. Gibbs was paying a business visit to Whakatano where he was stricken with pneumonia and sucumbod to the attack within a few days. The deceased gentleman was the eldest son of Mr. J, H. Gibbs, who hailed from Nelson, and was one of the original settlers on Mount Stewart road, Sandon. In his* early manhood, the son Albert drew a section in the Waimarino block when it was first opened up. After farming near Raetilii for some years he removed to Foxton and engaged in the flax milling industry and was for a period Mayor of the Borough. Later he conducted several successful saw-milling and other business enterprises at various centres along the Main Trunk Line and eventually settled at Taumarunui, At the time of his death ho was contemplating a retirement from active business and was about to occupy a new residence that he had built at Auckland. Mr. Gibbs was twice married and is survived by his wife and two step children. His aged father, Mr. J. H. Gibbs, of Marton, is now the sole surviving male representative of the pioneers who first took up land at Sandon, where the family were well known and respected. Other near relatives who are left to mourn are the brothers, Messrs. C. O. Gibbs (Auckland), Lewis Gibbs (Marton), Robert, Edward, and George Gibbs (Utiku). The surviving sisters are Mesdames A. H. Bead (Oliakune), A. Kristeusen (Feilding), E. B. Jennings (Palmerston North) and C. M. Lind (Rongotea), to all of whom widespread sympathy is extended. The interment took place at Auckland.
