Refugee Flood Compels Action By Hollaed

THE HAGUE —The Netherlands Government has adopted stringent rules to stem the flood of emigrants from Ger‘many and to prevent the entrance of large contingents of the 260,000 Jews said to be still living in the Reich. This departure from Netherlands’ traditional policy of hospitality which through the centuries has made this country an asylum for those who fled from political or religious persecution, is explained by recent changes in the immigration iDolicy of other countries, as well as through the Netherlands' owe heavy burden of unemployment.

The Netherlands' Government had to face the fact that the 260,000 Jews in the former German Reich cannot hope to find hospitality in Austria, as was the case before the Anschluss.

Now immigrants can only be admitted with a , valid passport and a statement from , the German authorities that the holder can return unhindered to Germany or Austria at any time. Moreover such ; a foreigner has to possess 500 Austrian ; schillings to qualify for a temporary • permit, and when submitting a request for definite settlement to possess capital to the value of at least 10,000 florins.
