NATIVE LAND SETTLEMENT f ' The expenditure of £60,000 in the Poverty Bay, East Coast and Wairoa districts and £IO,OOO on the Manawatu- * Wairarapa-Hawke’s Bay and South Island districts for the development of native land settlement schemes is provided for in the estimated vote of £950,000 for Native Land Settlement. Money Needed For Major Jobs PUBLIC WORKS ESTIMATES The Public Works estimates for the year ending March 31, 1939, contain several large amounts which have been set aside for major works in the Manswatu and nearby districts. For the Palmerston North railway deviation £BO,OOO is earmarked. The estimated cost of this work when authorised is set down at £1,002,500 and the amount required to complete the scheme is given as £746,000. The estimated cost of the TurakinaOkoia railway deviation is stated to be £500,000 and £158,200 is set aside for the current year, £184,296 having been already expended. A sum of £8,500 is required for a new dining and staff block at Flock House and a further £1250 for the agricultural laboratory at Palmerston North on which £5963 has already been spent. A sum of £IOOO is set down for the Levin Police Station, the total amount required for this job being mentioned as £3425. For the Palmerston North Police Station £20,000 is set down but the total cost is estimated at £29,000. A sum of £IOOO is also provided for a police residence at Pahiatua.

Additions to the Levin Post Office and purchase of land is to cost £4OOO and the additions to the Palmerston North Post Office £27,500 with £SSO for a storage site. For a postal residence and site at Feilding, the sum of £2050 is wanted.
