Girl Attacked by Lioness at Dannevirke

BEAST ATTEMPTS TO DRAGVICTIM INT 3 CAGE Per Press Association. DANNEVIRKE, July 25. Mias Ruth Russell, a High School girl, the daughter of Mr. H. T. Russell, Dannevirke, had an unenviable experience yesterday afternoon when visiting the local showgrounds where animals of a travelling circus are wintering. She, along with some companions, went to a shed in which were some lions in cages. While she was standing near a cage with her back half in to it a lipness shot out its right paw and struck the girl's right arm and drew her towards the cage. The companion of the girl was trying to pull her away when Mr. G. A. Dunlop, relieving inspector for the municipal abattoirs, upon hearing screams rushed up and found the lioness with its right paw round the girl’s hips trying to draw her into the cage. Fortunately the beast was unable to get its left paw under the bar of the cage, otherwise the girl’s plight would have been very serious. Mr. Dunlop, with an overcoat over an arm sufficiently startled the animal to make it release its grip on the girl and pulled her to safety. Her right arm was badly lacerated, necessitating several stitches, but beyond this she was not hurt, but those who saw what happened consider she is lucky to have got off so lightly.
