Women’s Institutes

The July meeting was held on Thursday afternoon, Mrs. G. Hoggard presiding. A motion of sympathy with a bereaved family was moved, members standing in silence. An apology for absence was read from Mrs. Eising. Mrs. Hoggard expressed pleasure at the place awarded to the institute at the recent drama festival and a vote of commendation was passed to the convener, Mrs. A. Wylie, and team. Tho motto for the day was “Do not hide to-day's sun behind tomorrow's cloud.” The state of the institute finances was set out by the hon. treasurer, Mrs. G. Eddie. It was reported that the cakes for the Dominion conference sales' stall are ready for sending, Mrs. Eddie having kindly baked these. Rc ripes for the new cookery book were received. Owing to the scarcity of flowers it was decided to change next month's competition for the September competition and hold the “floating bowl" competition instead in September. Mrs. G. McMurtrie entertained the members with two much appreciated elocutionary items, * ‘The Legend of BTegerny'' and ‘(Lochinvar.” Tea was served by the hostesses, Mrs. Vile and . i Sargent. The golden thread talk for the day was given by the secretary, Miss Florence Nightingale being the personality subject. Mrs. G. Eddie in charge of the box lecture set out a very interesting lecture entitled “Around Dress Material Counters,” showing means of testing various materials for quality and illustrated by numerous samples of woollen, silk, cotton and rayon materiails. The competitions for the day were kindly judged by Miss D. Day, the following placings being awarded: Baby's booties, Mrs. H. J. Sowry 1 and 2, Mrs. McMurtrie 3; best blooms, Miss Sargent 1, Mrs. Eddie 2, Mrs. Hoggard and Mrs. Vile 3 equal. BALLANCE The July meeting was held in the hall, Mrs. Chas. Holdaway presiding. Correspondence incluf d a circular from Massey College enclosing several copies of the prospectus of the Home-makers' Course in Domestic Science, to be held during November, these being distributed amongst members. There was a departure from the usual women's institute programme on this occasion when in place of the monthly competition an exhibition of antiques and curios was held, the result being a huge success. Many and varied were ' articles displayed, ranging from shawls, fans, pieces of china, a clock and other exhibits hundreds of years old, down to two types of bombs used during the late war. Members spent a very interesting half hour examining the large collection and listening to the information supplied by the various owners. A considerable portion of the exhibits belonged to Mrs. R. C. Austin, Pahiatua, and it was partly owing to her kindness in bringing these along that the display proved such an outstanding success. The talk on institute matters, which was to have been g'ven by Mrs. Austin, was held over until another time owing to the fact that a number of the new members were unfortunately suffering from influenza and were therefore not| able to attend the meeting. Spare copies of 1 ‘Home and Country" were handed out, also several issues of “The Countrywoman,'' a fascinating magazine published by “The Associated Countrywomen of tho World” and printed in London. Very enjoyable afternoon tea was dispensed by Mrs. S. H. Wheeler and Miss E. Gib«on, following which a novelty competition, arranged by Miss Gibson, who donated the prize, was vtered into with much zest, the winner proving to be Mrs. Chas. Holdaway. During the afternoon Mrs. R. G. McKenzie favoured the gathering with two "elightful vocal solos: “The Songs My Mother Sang to Me" and “Philosophy,” these being greatly appreciated. It was with extreme regret that the members heard of the passing of Mrs. J. D. C. Crewe, president of the Bush-Wairarapa federation and a loved member of tho local women's institute, and the secretary was asked to write to Mr. Crewe conveying symapthy. Men bers were reminded that the whole of the programme for the next meeting on August 11 will be very kindly provided by Woodville Women's Institute.
