Car Out of Control Somersaults on Road
WOMAN PASSENGER KILLED WAIHI, July 34. A well-known resident of Waihi was killed and two young men were slightly injured when the car in which they were travelling overturned about 10 mii.es past Te Puke on the Whakatane main highway this morning. The vehicle somersaulted four times before coining to rest on its hood. The victims were: Killed.—Mrs. Gladys Greenwood, aged 43, wife of Mr. Ezra Greenwood, dairy farmer, of Frankton road, Waihi. Injured.—Mr. Aubrey Greenwood, aged 21, son of Mr. and Mrs. Greenwood; injuries to the head and leg. Mr, Leonard Berryman, aged about 21, of Waihi, minor facial injuries. The fourth occupant of the car, Miss Muriel Marwood, of Huntley, escaped injury. The party left Waihi this morniug for Whakatane, where Mrs. Greenwood another vehicle about 10 miles beyond Te Puke, the car, which was driven by Mr. Aubrey Greenwood, became out of control when returning to the road after travelling a short distance on the pumice surface at the left of the bitumen. Somersaulting four times within a distance of 20 yards, the car came to rest upside down across the road, blocking traffic until it could be shifted to the side of the highway. Mrs. Greenwood was killed insatntly. The other occupants of the car were taken to Te Puke for treatment. Mrs. Greenwood was tho second daughter of Mrs. W. Hollis, who has been a resident of Waihi since 18S2. She was a prominent member of tho Waihi Ladies > Golf Club. An inquest was opened at To Puke this afternoon and, after evidence of identification had been given, was adjourned sine die.
