Institute Movement Spreads To Chatham Islands
INFORMATION FROM ANNUAL REPORT Included in the annual report to be presented at tho annual general meeting of Women’s Institutes in Wellington on Wednesday are the following interesting comments: — “The number of women’s institutes in New Zealand is now 900. A definite movement of population continues, the result of which is moro formations on the one hand, and on the other, in several cases, a combining of two institutes in one, so that the number of institutes remains protty much at a steady level. It is most interesting and encouraging to note that no month goes by without a new name added to the list, and more women brought into the institute family. A notable addition is tho Chatham Islands, which has been included in the Hutt Valley Federation, where a sister institute will keep closo touch month by month, sending practical help in the form of sample crafts and instructions, in addition to other information and news. An enquiry has been received from Raratonga, and we anticipate that an institute will come into being there,
and will bo adopted in the same way. There is no limit to our reach wherever ships can touch, and wc welcome warmly our sister members in those islands.
“We look back thankfully to much work accomplished; to a great volume of happiness in our meetings; and to tho continued spread of knowledge through our women’s institutes. Well aware that much of our achievements are made by ‘trial through error,’ wo note with thankfulness our growing wisdom in the use of money, applying it moro wisely; less widely and emotionally, in the knowledge of our purposes of education; in elections and tho right choice of people for positions suited to their abilities; and in the greater courage of our members, in taking their place as citizens and in many other intangible attainments; all signs of the steady progress of our organisation. We look forward to playing an ever more definite part in our country’s welfare by welcoming into our midst every good and useful form of education.”
