Market Gardeners
GOVERNMENT'S INTEREST IN INDUSTRY Pot Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 7. The annual conference of the Dominion Council of the New Zealand Tomato Berry Fruit and Produce Growers was opened to-day by the Minister of Agriculture, who mentioned that there were 5871 acres of market gardens, comprising 1000 holdings and producing about £1,000,000 worth of goods. The Minister spoke of the Government’s interest in the welfare of the industry, and referring to the standardisation of quality of fruit and certain vegetables, said that the co-operation of the industry had been sought in an attempt to bring about some system that would be beneficial to the growers, and at the same time result in a more equal distribution and more valuable production.
If there were any matters upon which the conference wished to' make representations the Government would be pleased to hear them and give them due consideration.
Mr E. J. Fawcett, acting-Director-General of Agriculture, also spoke.
