Permanent Horae For Royal Show
MAY BE END OF ROYAL AGRICULTURAL SOCIETY Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, July 7. Til possibility of holding a stock show in Wellington during the Centennial Exhibition, and of securing a permanent home in Wellington for the Royal Agricultural Society was discussed by the council of the society to-day. Mr L. J. Wild, president of the society, said that the committee which had investigated the proposal thought the site of the Wallaceville Animal Research Station entirely suitable. However the Director-General of Agriculture, Mr A. H. Cockayne, had written stating that he had no knowledge of any proposal to transfer the land to the society and sought details. Mr Wild said that he gathered that Mr Cockayne was playing for time. The Mayor of Wellington had stated that though it was possible for the exhibition site to be used as a permanent ground for Royal Shows it was wanted for a sports area. Other sites were possibly available and the City Valuer was inquiring about these. Sir William Perry said that the Wallaceville site was an ideal position. Mr M. E. Lyons, Christchurch, said that as far as the South Island was concerned it would mean the definite disintegration of the Royal Agricultural Society if an attempt were made to establish a permanent home for the show.
The report of the committee on the site question was adopted and a committee appointed to consider the question of having a stock show at the time .of the exhibition
