Russia the Real Enemy
JAPAN FIGHTING FOR LIFE OR DEATH WELLINGTON, Last Night. Wellington Japanese kept no observances of the anniversary of tho outbreak of the war, stated the Japauesu Consul (Mr. Kuchi Gunji) to-day. “Wc shall celebrate when we succeed and not until then," ho said. “Our newly appointed Foreign Minister, General Ugaki, mado a statement that Japan was prepared to carry on the war for ten years if necessary. That should confound those who have said Japan was exhausting her forces. That is not true. Russia is reported to be preparing to attack Japan when sho has exhausted her strength against China, bu: Japan has been expecting that emergency and is ready to c6po with it. “ lu our view China is only a puppe. in the hands of Russia and Japan has withheld her resources for that reason. The whole nation is united in supporting the Government ’a policy. It is characteristic of our people that they unite to meet external troubles. I still hear it said that Japan will be bankrupted or there will bo a revolution, but that comment is made by those who do not understand the Japanese character. Our people are intensely patriotic. Why should they revolt?
“Many instances in history go to show that whenever Japan is faced with war bbe has made distinct economic and national progress. That was the case after the previous SinO-Japa-neso War, after the Russo-Japanese War and after the Great War. Japan’s national power was increased upon each occasion. The present war has greatly stimulated Japan and her merchants.
and business houses do not hesitate to hand over much of their profits to the Government. China, on the other hand, has never bocn united except under Marshal Chiang Kai-shek. Her people are accustomed to domination by other races and as long as they are treated kindly it is all the same to them. Now the Chinese are saying China will ultimately have victory in order to influence those Chinese who aro coming under Japanese administration. It is simply anti-Japanese propaganda. Wft aro fighting for life or death and wc r.ro confident We shall emerge victorious."
