Edric Cundell, 45-year-old new principal of the Guild-hall School of Music in succession to Sir I,andou Ronald, recently’ told his funny story of how he composed a symphonic poem when fighting in Serbia during the War. “It was something of a miracle/ 7 said Mr Cundell. “I had to go into the town of Monastir to get a piano. “I constructed a 7 cello out of petrol tins and boxes. A few days later the piano went sky high when our dugcut was blown up, and the 'cello is in a war museum in Southern Europe. “Still, 1 Serbia/ was transformed into a march and presented to the late King Alexander. ” Mr Cundell began his career as a French horn player at Covent Garden.
