Baths at Te Aroha
MINERAL WATER SHORTAGE. TE AROHA, July 4. A reply has been received from the Minister in charge of the Tourist and Publicity Departments, the Hon. F. Langstone, regarding the suggestions for baths in the Te Aroha Government Domain. Mr Langston© stated that the present output of the two bores in the domain was so small as to make the question of a hot mineral bath not practicable. The Minister referred to an article on the Te Aroha thermal waters by Dr. J. Henderson. The article stated that by drilling enough suitably placed bores at To Aroha the whole supply of thermal water would be captured. This would cause all the springs to dry up. A greater supply would possibly be obtained by pumping, but if more deep-seated water was obtained, this would be drawn from a wider section of the fissure system, and some change in temperature and composition would be possible. In view of this article, Mr Langstone stated that he was doubtful whether it would be advisable to put down further bores in the meantime, as tne risk and the expenditure did not seem to be commensurate with the advantages to be gained. Replying to the suggestion for a totally fresh-water bath, artificially heated, the Minister said this questiou had been gone into a number of years ago, when it was found that tho cost would be excessive. The question, however, would be given further consideration. In addition, the proposal for a partly mineral water bath would bo investigated. Mr Langstoue also stated that the question of a filtration system had been looked into, and it was considered that it would not prove satisfactory.
Tho Auckland Rugby League has made an attractive oiler to G. Ngaia, the Taranaki representative and Maori All Black, to play League football at Auckland. Although the offer will remain opeu for a week, it is understood that Ngaia will definitely decline. He was a member of the Taranaki team which was defeated by Auckland recently. Ngaia loured with tho Maori All Black team iu Australia in 1935 and he must be well iu tho running for this year’s trip to Fiji. He has played splendid games for Taranaki this season against Wanganui and King Country. Although ho was not at his best in the Auckland game, tho League officials were evidently impressed with his possibilities. There was no cash payment attached to the Auckland offer, but Ngaia was to be given an attractive permanent situation.
