Very Heavy Going

QUADROON WINS 810 RACE SPRINT TO SWEET ROSE (Special to "Times.") e WELLINGTON, Last Night. p The principal event at Trentham t to-day, the Parliamentary Handi- 1 cap, was won easily by the Awa- o puni-trained Quadroon, who is par- a tacularly well at present. The ? course was so heavy that the win- f ner took 2min. 29$sec. to run the u ten furlongs. The leading jumpers n were not seen in action, being re- r served for Saturday. The totalise- c tor receipts for the day were ( a £46,546 10S against £43,003 last j i year, an increase of £3543 10s. z Now Owner’s Success. There was solid backing for Settle- J ment in tho Highweight Handicap, but * the southerner was not quite good «• enough and was beaten into third place. * Iddo made most of the running and being well seasoned, was still prominent at the finish. Others handy in the run 1 to the straight were Warehi, Lustral, Raroa and Settlement. Lustral was definitely superior in tho run _liom6 and - beat Warehi by a length with Settle- * ment another length away. Iddo was a | fair fourth. Tho southerner, Scrap, ■ made a move from last halfway through | - the race, but did not run on in the > straight. Chat was disappointing and i so was Entheos. Lustral, like Matoru, - who won on the first day recently, 1 changed hands, passing into the owner- ; ship of Mr. T. Fisher and the Trentham - trainer, T. R. George. Four on End. Shining Hours won her fourth race in succession when she led the field home in the Trial Plate. She was not : prominent early but came on the outer ■ after reaching the straight and scored nicely by a couple of lengths. Slylox, who was second, ran a good race all | the way, but was no match for the winner and was ridden out to make sure of holding second place. Allmetie was a fair third, just ahead of Yours Truly, Morning Flight, Fairy Dale, Stargono, Keen Sight and Phil. Titter was the leader to the straight, but failed to stick. Favourite Fails Badly. After having run a good race on the first dav Black Man let his backers down in the Corunna Hurdles. Black Man, Southern Blood and Chaste led along the back from King Mestor and Laggard with Sunee last. Black Man was receding near the half-mile, whero King Mestor was advancing. King Mestor went right away and ran on for an easy win from Southern Blood, with Chaste a poor third and Laggard fourth. King Mestor’a form was a big improvement on his Tecent efforts and ho paid a great price. Contract fell. Great Pal Again. Jan Ridd, Superior Guard and Great ! Pal were the early leaders in the Seatoun Handicap and they came on to the | course proper at tho head of a closely • bunched field. In the run from the false rail Great Pal forged ahead, but he was challenged by Jan Ridd. Tho two fought a hard battle for the rest of the journey and Great Pal, who always had | a little the better of matters, won by a neck. Flying Acre was a moderate third, and" Lady Leigh ran another fair race in fourth place. After the placed horses were Superior Guard, Philemup, Jazz Boy, Silver Fox and Hunting Chorus. Captain Tudor, who had not raced for a long while and was at a long price, was chopped out soon after the start and finished near the rear. Weak Steeplechase Field A weak field contested the Matai Steeplechase and form pointed to Kahu- • noke, who was backed to a short price. Kahunoke and Chile led together nearly all tho way. Monastic moved into second place entering the straight, but did not seriously trouble Kahunoke, who won comfortably by a couple of lengths. Chile was five lengths away third, and Red Sun was a very poor fourth. Acron was tho only other starter. Easy for Quadroon The Parliamentary Handicap did not draw a big field and was easily won by the improving Quadroon, who stripped in splendid condition. Quadroon and Conveyer led the field out of the straight, but Conveyer soon retired and Quadroon, Monipere and Airam took up tho running. These were the leaders along the back with Conveyer in behind them. Conveyer ovidently moved away from tho rails as Arctic King got through on the inner of him. Monipere led across tho top from Airam and Quadroon, with Quadroon going very well. Quadroon ran on splendidly and easily beat .Arctic King, who was ridden out to beat General Ruse, who was near the rear entering the straight. Monipore was fourth. Ariam, Last Refrain and Brazen King dropped right out of tho race and barely finished. The winner is at the top of his form now. Enge again ran most disappointingly and he was in trouble a fair distance from home. Huge Dividend. Taking charge crossing the top and coming into the straight with her cars pricked Sweet Rose went on to win the Members' Handicap with tho greatest case. The only opponent to make a good showing at the finish was Gaily who beat the rest just as easily but had no chance of getting to -Sweet Rose. Thala and Merial filled the minor places and after them, all very tired, came Wagner, Matoru, Liane, Pukeko and Te Hai. The winner was the outsider and her dividend neared the half century. The Wrecker’s Failure. The Wrecker, a hot favourite, failed badly in tho Petone Handicap. War Lap led across the top and into the straight from Royal Tinge, with Sunbeam handy and Gold Glare improving his position. In the run home Royal Tinge won well from Sunbeam, while Auto Sweep ran into third place ahead of Gold Glare. The Wrecker was nicely placed for half the journey, but was beaten before reaching the straight. RACING FIXTURES July 9: Wellington B.C. July 9:.Westport J.C. (ut Rieearton).
