From Ocr Own Correspondent Labour Party. Friday evening again saw a good attendance of card players for the second euchre and dance held in the hall under the auspices of the Manawatu Heads branch of the Labour Party. The points secured during play were the first in the allocation of points for the end of the season aggregate prize. Mr P> Smith was the winner in the men’s section, with Mr F. Hartley runner-up. Ladies’ prizes resulted: Mrs McPhail 1, Mr H. Hartley (playing as lady) 2. After supper, dancing was continued until piidnight. Mr J. Smith carried out the duties of M.C.. A competition was won by Mr Brophy, and a lucky Gay Gordons by Mrs F. Shortt and Mr Jim Smith. It is expected that a similar function will be held in a fortnight’s time. The Foxton Harbour Board lias now placed a gang of men In constant work at the beach. They will undertake necessary repairs to roads, planting of sand grass, and cleaning and improving generally. A sudden high wind which sprang up in the early hours of Wednesday morning, was responsible for considerable damage to telephone lines between the beach and Foxton. Some very severe gusts, accompanied by rain, were experienced, and minor damage is also reported by householders. Surprias Harty. Mrs C. Vendoro was the organiser of a surprise party held at the residence of Mr and Mrs A. Alsop on Wednesday evening, when the opportunity was taken to congratulate Mr Alsop on the attainment ef his seventy-sixth birthday on June 23. The visitors were accorded a warm welcome by a genuinely surprised host and hostess' Enjoyable games of cards were played, the ladies challenging the gentlemen. and honours were practically even. Supper was dispensed by the visitors, after which Mr Alsop thanked those present for their good wishes and expressed the pleasure the evening had given both himself and Mrs Alsop. He said he hoped it would be repeated on the occasion of his next birthday. |
