Solomon Ben Joseph, who was sen fenced to death for firing on a bus and carrying arms, was executed at the Acre gaol, despite the night-long efforts of influential Jewish organisations to procure a reprieve. Angry crowds of Jews thronged the streets, clashing with steel-helmeted police. Two British constables were stoned. Shops were closed as a protest after which the curfOw was enforced. Joseph went to his death singing tho nationalist song. Ten revisionist comrades were permitted to remove the body from the prisop, accompanied by a police guard, to the place of burial. Two hundred Jews demonstrated at Tel Aviv and clashed with the police, who made a baton charge, injuring 12. Unsuccessfully appealing in the Jerusalem Courts against the death sentence passed on Solomon Ben Joseph, counsel ■aid that if it was carried out it would be the first time a Jew had been executed in Palestine since the destruction ol the Temple of Herod the Great in the year 70 A.D. Appeals for clemency were received from Jewish communities all over the world.
