“Suicide Units” Compelled To Retire
HEAVY FIGHTING ON YANGj.SE Received Friday, l a.m. Hankow admits that the Chinese “suicide units” defending the two remaining forts at Matang have been compelled to evacuate their positions despite the arrival of reinforcements. Heavy fighting is in progress on a fifteen-mile front on the south bank of the Yangtse from Matang. Chinese aircraft are ceaselessly bombing Japanese warships below tho boom. A Peking message states that Chinese guerillas from the hills northwest of the city are advancing towards Shanhaikwan. “ROBIN HYDE” SAFE ARRIVAL AT TSINGTAO The many friends of Miss Iris Wilkinson (“Robin Hyde”), of Northland, Wellington, who was reported recently as missing in China, is now reported safe. Her father, Mr. G. E. Wilkinson, has been advised by tho Internal Affairs Department that a cable message has been received from tho British Consul-General at Shanghai stating that Miss Wilkinson has arrived safely at Tsingtao, having got safely through from Suchow, and will proceed to Shanghai to-day.
