Rev. J. D. W. Raine has been appointed vicar of Ngaruawahia and will be instituted ou July 10. Tho diploma of Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons of Lngland lias been granted to Air. E. H. W. Gif ford, M.B. New Zealand, Otago and Guy’s. Dr. A. M. Begg, director of cancer research, will leave in August on a year’s leave of absence to eouduct further research in England off his theory of the genesis of cancer.

Mr W. f. Goodwin has returned to New Zealand after serving for three years as Director of Agriculture in the Cook Islands, in August he will take over his former position as AssistantDirector of the Horticultural Division, a position which he previously held for about fourteen years.

Professor Van Duscn, professor of theology at the Union Theological Seminary, New York, and dean of students, accompanied by Mrs. Van Dus6n, will arrive by the Monterey at Auckland from San Francisco on July 8. They will leave the same day for Waitoino and Rotorua.

Air 0. H. Hoskin, V.D., has been appointed organist and choirmaster at St Matthew’s Anglican Church, St. Albans, Christchurch. Air Hoskin has been bandmaster and conductor of the baud of the Ist. Battalion, Canterbury Regiment, for twenty years, and is well known in musical circles.

At a meeting of the general committee for the A. and P. Farmers’ Union old-time ball yesterday opportunity was taken by the chairman, Air. J. A. Russell, to offer felicitations on behalf of those present, to Mr. W. H. Brown on his recent marrikgc, Air. Brown briefly acknowledging the good wishes on behalf of his wife and himself.

Mr A. H. AtcLintock, M. A., of Waitabuna, who is at present studying at London University, has had one of his recent etchings, entitled '(Early Spring,” accepted for exhibition at the Paris Salon. Air AlcLintock has now achieved the distinction of having had work hung at three of the most outstanding exhibitions in the world of art —the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and now tho Paris Salon. Laurence Keelan AlcAlurrich, chief engineer of tho Utiion Steam Ship Company’s inter-island express steamor Kangatira. Air. AicAturrich, who was 52 years of age, was on duty on Aionday at his ship, which is undergoing a survey. He died at his home late that night. From February, 1926, to July, 1981, he acted as assistant to the superintending engineer and served in a similar capacity from October, 1932, to March, 1933. He was appointed chief engineer of the Rnngatira in January, 1934, a post he retained until his death. On the eve of his retirement, Air. G. H. Lloyd, district valuer, Hastings, was larewelled by a number of his friends and colleagues at a meeting of the Palmerston North branch of the New Zealand Government Valuers’ Institute on Alonday. On behalf of friends present and abseut, Mr. N. H. Alackic presented Air. Lloyd with a suitcase. Mr. Lloyd was held in great esteem and admired by all wXh whom he came in contact, both officially and otherwise, and all present joined in wishing him good health and many years to enjoy his well-earned retirement after his thirly-threo years’ service.

Formerly weil known as the Clerk of the Court at Christchurch, Air. William Arthur Dunbar Banks died this week at the age of seyenty-four years. A long and distinguished service lor the Government was brought to a close when the lato Mr. Banks retired on dune 80, 1922. Air. Banks could look back over a period of forty years when he had served at different court offices in New Zealand, including New Plymouth, "Wellington and Auckland, aud for a period on the West Coast. Air. Banks was regarded as a. very efficient officer and was always courteous. He was highly respected by members ol‘ fhe Police Force with whom he came in contact.

Father C. E. Ardagh, priest-in-charge at (Queenstown, travelled to England via America, spending weeks in the United fetates aud Canada. After seeing Liverpool, Birmingham aud London, he left on Alay 28 for Budapest to attend, as a Ne\> Zealand representative, tho International Congress (Eucharistic;. Ho had the distinction of being the represeuta-ivo who had travelled the longest distance. After seeing Hungary and Austria, he returned to London early iu June ou his way to the North and Scotland. He attended the Alilitary Tattoo at Aidershot, and was present also at the Trooping of the Colour at the Horse Guards’ parade. He does not expect to return to New’ Zealand until February.
