Work at Trentham

BRYCE STREET, KTLBERIS AND HUNTING BLOOD ON HAND Conditions were bleak for track work at Trentham yesterday and the trial grass was heavy. “Kangatira,” of the Post, had the following comment to make about yesterday’s trials:— Very little jumping was done. J. W. Lowe does not intend to let Red Sun face the sod wall again till race day, when it is hoped that he will not mind it, as this fence is the second-last on the first round in the Wellington Steeplechase and the horses are by j that time usually well warmed to their job. Jewish Lad (B. Sullivan) gave a capital exhibition alone over four fences. He went at an even pace and showed himself a very clever jumper for one with so little experience, j Beau Gallante (P. Burgess) ran down the two fences he jumped, but he has always been a poor schooler and is rarely jumped except on race day. Laggard (J. McCauley) went over I four fences on Wednesday and two more yesterday, jumping low and smartly for a horse of his stami). Lustral (Burgess) again gave a satis- | factory display over four fences, and he goes to Marton, when Burgess will ride him. Bryce Street (N. C. Trillo) did solid pacing over a couple of rounds. He is ' a short, well-covered, thick-set gelding who is the right typo for steeplechasing, and hq worked pleasingly. Kilberis j (Trillo), exercised in the centre, is a j much leaner customer and ho did not j impress as his stablemato did. Hunting I Blood, who looks well, was given paco work only. j Sunee (S. G. Robinson) drew away | I from Red Sun (L. T. Nesbitt) at the end of a mile in lmin. 51 2-ssec., the last half-mile in 55 3-ssec. These j horses will be ridden by G. Bidgway I and C. Thomson respectively on Tuesday. I Sunder was given an exercise canter over seven furlongs. Monteloo revealed a complete lack of pace when going a • mile with Laggard after the latter had done his school. Sigurd (G. Flood) finished on well over a length ahead of Debham (Sullivan), with Phil (A. G. P. Newnham) tailed off, after running five furlongs in lmin. 8 2-ssec., the last half-mile in 54sec. Debham had much the worst of the weights. Essex (Nesbitt) ran half a mile alone in 53 4-ssec. Though he has not raced for eighteen months, he had recently done a good deal of solid work and he is by no means backward. Arctic King (Wilson) was not extended over half a milo in 58sec. Raroa (Newnham) took 55 3-ssec. Alunga (A. W. Sim) did an easy five furlongs in lmin. II sec. Sunbeam (Burgess) caught Fairy Dale (A. E. Bennett) just short of the post at the end of half a mile in 53 sec., which was a good gallop on the heavy going. Rockingham (T. Young) and Liano (Wilson) did an easy six furlongs in lmin. 29see. Coronado beat Quexona by a couple of lengths over half a mile in 54 3-ssec. Mother-in-Law (McCauley) was three lengths ahead of Gay Hunting (V. Be van) after running the last half-mile of five furlongs in 55sec. Matoru (Doyle) slipped over five furlongs in lmin. Bsec., the last half-mile in 53 3-ssec., and he seemed to be doing his work well. TRENTHAM ENGAGEMENTS J. McCauley: Laggard, Mothcr-in-Law. G. R. Tattersall: Kinloch. C. G, Goulsbro: Essex. N. C. VETERAN MAKES HISTORY Looking none the worse for his journey of 2000 miles by road in a floating horse box drawn by a motor car, the South Australian sprinter, and Doomben Newmarket candidate, Aurie’s Star, arrived in Brisbane. J. J. Doyle, trainer of Auric’s Star, is 75 years of age, but ho is of the wire and whipcord type, and docs not look his age. He was accompanied by another South Australian trainer, E. Shaw, who drove the car. Four days were spent in Melbourne j and two in Sydney, but otherwise the , horse was not taken out of the box | on the entire trip. I The front of the box was open so | that the horse had a good view of the j scenery, and, in addition, the side win- ! J dows of the float were opened on hot; J days. • Doyle stated that the crack sprinter 1 was a horse of super intelligence, and I demonstrated keen enjoyment of the 1 trip.
