24 Hours’ Delay In Ship’s Departure

CREW’S PROTEST AGAINST COMPANY’S ACTION Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, Last Night. As a protest against the alleged action of the company tho crew of the Union Company’s coastal steamer Kaimiro refused to take her to sea ou Saturday and delayed her departuro from Auckland for Portland and Wellington about 24 hours until shortly after 6 o ’clock to-night. A claim was made by the men that they should have received double pay for tho recent Sunday sailing from Westport. Only ordinary time was allowed as the company held that as Westport was a bar harbour from which movements cannot always be kept to schedule this rate for Sunday departures was provided in the award. A meeting of the crew on Saturday resulted in a decision being reached to register a protest by refusing to sail until 6 p.m. to-day. This decision was communicated to Captain Gardiner and as it was then impossible to engage another crew the ship was kept at the wharf until the time fixed by the crew was reached.
