Tokomaru

From Our Own Correspondent. Mrs L. Ennis, of Ohingalti. was a visitor to Tokomaru during the week. Mrs G. Jerrln, of Wellington, spent part of the week-end with her daughter, Mrs R. Waghorn. Mrs S. Simpson, of Palmerston North, is spending two or three weeks with her daughter, Mrs J. Anderson. Mrs A. Burt has returned home for two weeks before returning to hospital for an operation of the eyes. The bi-annual meeting of householders was held on Monday evening, Mr R. W. Guy presiding over a fair attendance. The balance-shee 1 : showed the finances of the school to be in a healthy state. In his report the chairman outlines activities of the committee during the last two years. He mentioned the fact that for the first i time Tokomaru had entered the Calf Club and at Levin had been successful in annexing the championship shield for a team of three calves, a very meritorious performance indeed. He thanked the retiring committee for the loyal support they had given him, and for the time and trouble they had given to matters connected with the school. A vote of thanks was moved by him to the head teacher and staff. The head teacner’s report mentioned that the school had risen a grade since he came and as a result the staff had been increased to three. He reviewed the sporting activities of the school for the year and Intimated that a team had been entered for both the football and basketball for the coming season. In conclusion, he thanked the stall and parents for their co-operation in all matters concerning the welfare of the children. The following is the committee elected for the ensuing term: Messrs R. W. Guy, S. D. Lloyd, L. Jamieson, M. Corlett and L. G. Simpson. A short meeting w r as held by the new committee, and Mr R. W. Guy was reelected chairman and Mr S. D. Lloyd, secretary. It was decided to lay a concrete path to the head teacher’s house and also' to have the hedge cut in front of the scool. Following their usual custom, the Tokomaru Tennis Club held a yankee tournament at Easter. Owing to the inclement weather, the finals were not played until last weekend, when Hrs H. parr beat Mrs Miss I. Hansen m the women’s singles; Mr A. Simpson beat Mr L. G. Simpson In the men's singles; and Mrs H. Parr and Mr L. Simpson beat Miss N. Schwass and Mr R. Waghorn in the combined doubles.
