Women’s Institute

BULLS. Mrs Huddleston presided over a large attendance at the April meeting. Mrs Huddleston and Mrs Stewart were elected delegates to the annual council meeting. Tho competition for next month will be for the best article made from 1 yard of cretonne, and trimming not to cost more than fid; also specimen bloom. Mrs Thorby and Mrs Jurgens were in charge of the trading stall. A flower competition was held the winners being Mrs Wilson and Miss Richards who tied for first place. Tho committee were hostesses for the day. The flower show was the feature of the day the exhibits surpassing all expectation, many beautiful blooms being shown. Tho decorative classes were outstandbest display she had seen for a long time. The judges were:—Mrs Baltrop (Feilding) decorative classes; Mrs Fitzpatrick (Feilding) cooking; Mrs W. gens 1. SANSON. Airs C. E. Eglinton presided over a fair attendance at the April meeting. Alembcrs stood in silence as an expression of sympathy for Alesdames J. Bradley, J. Beattie, AlcCorkindalc and Waring-Taylor. Airs W. J. Rowan was unanimously elected to attend the Dominion conference to be held in Wellington in July. A discussion ensued on remits for the council meeting in Palmerston North. The president thanked all those who had helped to make the open evening and flower show a success, and said special thanks were due to Airs F. Hill, and to the donors of trophies. The juniors then took charge of the evening, when a interesting demonstration of pine needle basket making was given by Aliss L. Gedye. A vocal solo by Aliss N. Alasters, and an elocutionary item by Miss D. Flyger were much appreciated. Airs Smith was in charge of a grocery list competition, tne winner proving to be Airs F. S. Collier. An advertising competition arranged by Aliss J. Butler was won by Mrs W. Pearce and Miss Gedye. A

competition for the best bloom in the garden was won by Airs Gulbransen, with Airs Pearce securing second and third place's. The president thanked the junior members for a most entertaining evening. It was resolved to hold a golden thread talk on nutrition, each member to take a turn every month. TOKOMARU. Airs AlacNab presided over a good attendance in April, three new members being welcomed. Members stood in silence in respect to the memory of tho late Airs A. Burt, one of the oldest and

most valuable members. Apologies for absence were received from Alesdames A. Boote, Al. West, A. Cheer, and J. Anderson. It was decided to hold the birthday early in May. Airs B. Hay kindly consented to make the birthday

cake and Airs C. Osman is to decorate and ice it. Airs H. Parr and Airs L. Simpson were the delegates elected to attend the*.group rally to be held in Shannon. Airs J. Ella and Airs Harper were elected delegates to the annual council meeting at Palmerston North. It was decided to give a points prize at tho end of the year for the most points received in connection with tho monthly competitions. There will also be a special prize donated by the president for the member who proves herself the most untiring in helping to carry oat the aims and objects of the Women’s Institute. An interesting demonstra tion was given by Airs AlcNab on woodpulp flowers, and by Airs Ella on velvet flowers. The demonstrators had a variety of sprays on view, and were accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The monthly competition for the best savory resulted:—Airs AI. Corlett 1, Airs C. Lang 2; tho infant teacher, Aliss AlcKcndry, being judge. Mrs N. Thompson was the winner of the guessing competition. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Airs Osman and Airs Tompson.
