Maori Drunk in Charge
GAOL FOR THIRD OFFENCE HASTINGS, Last Night. A Maori, Kupe Tamabere, of Pakipaki, was charged before Mr. J. Miller, S.M. in the Hastings Magistrate’s Court this morning with being found in charge of a motor vehicle in Karamu road, Hastings, while in a state of Intoxication. He pleaded guilty. Detetcive-Sergeant L. Revell, prosecuting for the police, stated that accused had been found in Heretaunga street and a doctor summoned by the police had no difficulty in pronouncing accused intoxicated. Accused admitted having had two previous convictions of being intoxiacted while- driving motor vehicles, but when asked what be had to say he said he was not drunk. ‘‘lt is almost a recognised thing,** said the Magistrate, “that a second offender goes to prison, and this is your third offence. I cannot let you off with a fine. Every time I come out to Hastings I have one of these cases. You will be sentenced to one month’s imprisonment and I will cancel your licence for three year*.*’
