Rod and Gun Activities WELLINGTON ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY The annual report of the activities of the Palmerston North branch of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, reads as follows: — Fishing. —The fishing for the beginning of the season was better than the past two or three seasons. Good bags have been reported to have been taken in the Manawatu. In the Kahutarawa there were plenty of fish but small. In the Tiritca several good fish were taken in the latter part of the season up to 51b. weight. The Oroua fished well in the early part of the season, but owing to the humid conditions they apparently left after mid-summer. The Rahgitikei river fished well for the first three months of the season, but since then owing to low water and green weed it has not been so good. Several limit bags were taken from this river early in the season. The fish taken from all streams were all reported to be in good condition. The following were allocations for the year: Rainbow fry, Gudopp’s Lake and Lake William, which apparently have done well, Last season, owing to the difficulty in procuring sufficient brown trout ova and the excellent condition of our nursery streams, the committee decided to forego its allocation of brown fry as it was considered the fish were more urgently required in other districts. It was understood from the Wellington Council that Palmerston North would receive sufficient yearlings for its requirements. Ducks. —The duck shooting in this district was particularly good for the last season. Many good bags were taken, probably owing to the dry season in the Hawke’s Bay district. The swan which were liberated on the Hokowhitu sanctuary are reported to be doing well. This sanctuary has now been fenced and should prove an excellent breeding ground for ducks, and will no doubt prove to be a great acquisition to the society. Mallard duck seem to be doing particularly well in this district and in a year or two will provide the bulk of the shooting. Pheasants.—The allocation of birds for the season was 150. Of this number 120 have already been liberated. Owing to the long, dry spring and summer the natural increase in the pheasants should be considerable, many good clutches having been reported. Quail. —Quail are still reported to be scarce in this district. These birds do not appear to make much headway, although several good coveys have been reported in coastal areas. Hares. —Hares do not seem to be increasing in this district, but appear to be holding their own. Opossums.—Not many trappers were out last season owing to the low r price of skins. A close season would be a benefit both to trapper and opossum. The committee again tenders thanks to the landowners for granting access to shooters and fishermen, and would appeal to sportsmen to respect property owners ’ rights. The report conveys thanks to the secretary for his attention to the branch affairs and to Mr. I. Andrews, ranger, for the way in which he has carried out his duties, and also to all those who have assisted in the liberation of fish and game. The report also thanks the honorary auditor, Mr. P. S. Larcomb, for his services.
