School Committees Meet

COLLEGE STREET AFFAIRS Present at last evening’s meeting of the College Street School Committee were: Col. J. H. Whyte (chairman), E. Persson (secretary), H. Christmas, W. F- Cutler, W. R. Taylor, H. G. Mills, E. A. Shackleton, J. Crighton and E. Cruickshank. The headmaster, Mr. L. J. Plank, reported that during March the attendance had been good and tho roll had increased to 534. Miss N. Louisson had been attached to tho school as a supernumary. Mrs. Taylor had gone to Hokowhitu. Swimming certificates issued by the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association had been gained by pupils during the season as follows:—Learners 53, proficiency 32, merit 19. Thanks were due Mr. and Mrs. McLeod who at all times welcomed the pupils to the baths. Several cases ot apples had been received from Mr. G. W. Arlidgo for the children. The distribution of free milk continued daily. Over 90 per cent, of the children had their half-pint daily. This being the last meeting of the present committee, Mr. Plank, on behalf of the school staff, expressed appreciation for the committee’s co-operation and interest in the welfare of the school. Colonel Whyte expressed the committee’s thanks to the staff for the work they had done. A letter of thanks is to be sent Mr. and Mrs. McLeod, custodians of the Municipal baths, for the interest they had taken in the school swimming. Tributes were paid to the work of the chairman on behalf of the school. TERRACE END SCHOOL At the meeting of the Terrace End School Committee last night regret was expressed by the chairman that Messrs. J. K. Paton, C. R. Luke and J. Davidson were retiring from the committee. Mr. W. B. Tennent presided and others present were Messrs. R. C. Donald, 11. L. Cunningham, H. D. Milne, J. David son, C. R. Luke, J. Iv. Paton and J. Blackwood (secretary). Mr. Luke, said the chairman, had been 10 years on the committee and secretary seven years. Mr. Davidson had been a member for the remarkably long term of 20 years and had been greatly responsible for the erection of the school baths. Mr. Paton, although on the committee for only five years, had been treasurer for all that time but one month and had submitted three balance-sheets to tho auditor, only one of which was returned bearing one tag. At tho suggestion of Mr. Milne a motion of sympathy was passed with the relatives of Miss Z. M. Sollitt, who was a victim of the railway accident at Rfftana. Miss Sollitt was once a pupil of the Terrace End School. Kelvin Grove School Committee wrote expressing their gratitude to the Terrace End Committee for the use of the school baths. As the result of a letter from the Palmerston North Sunday School Union it was resolved that the union make use of the school for their examination.

The visiting committee, Messrs. Blackwood and Donald, visited the sehool yesterday and subsequently made certain recommendations to the committee.

When the headmaster asked for the committee’s opinion on the advisability of holding an Anzac Day service at the school on Monday, April 25, it was decided that the service be held at 9.30 a.m. on Anzac Day and that Mr. Donald give the address. The headmaster, Mr. A. W. Thompson, reported that the number on the roll was 600. There had been a fair amount of sickness among the pupils during the month and daily attendances had been only fair. The number on the roll of the hospital class was 10. Miss B. B. McDonald, who had been attached to the staff as a supernumerary assistant had been withdrawn to fill a relieving position at Tiritea. March 8, Mr. W. J. Boden, senior inspector, visited the school and discussed with the staff amendments in tho schemes of work for the current year. The board’s carpenters had placed double windows in the smaller room of the wooden building. This had greatly improved the lighting and ventilation of that class room. Thanks were due to G. W. Arlidge and Co. for seven bushel cases of Gravenstein apples for the pupils. The time had now elapsed for the payment of fees for the dental clinic. Out of a roll of 237 some 50 were unfinancial and unless the fee for the current year was paid these 50 names would be deleted from the roll. As it was the last meeting of the committee before the elections Mr. j iioinpson, on behalf of the staff, expressed their thanks and appreciation for the manner in which the committee had at all times studied the interests of the school. To the retiring members they particularly extended their thanks and expressed their regret that circumstances do not permit of their offering their services for & further tern.
