Mystery Against Panorama of Navy Life

STARTLING CRIME IN “MURDER IN THE FLEET” (Kosy: Now Screening.) Laughs and thrills blend, and excitement, romance and comedy run rampant in “Murder in the Fleet,' ’ Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer's new detective thriller with a warship as its locale.

The story deals with murders on board, visitors and crew impounded while a young lieutenant turns detectivc, trails a killer, and after a desperate light, corners him. Robert Taylor, of “Society Doctor” and "Times Square Lady,” is the uniformed sleuth, and Jean Parker, of “Sequoia” fame, plays his sweetheart in her most ambitious role to date.

Major thrills are the fight with the criminal in a flooded powder magazine as water slowly rises, the strange killing of the Government engineer, the chase through the ship’s compartments, the episode of the live wire, and the race against time to instal a firing gear.

Edward Sedgwick, who directed “Death on the Diamond,” filmed the new picture. The cast includes Jean Hersholt, of “Men in White” fame, ia the principal character role, Nat Pendleton, Ted Hcnly, Una Merkel, Mary Doran, Arthur Byron, Frank Shields, Donald Cook, Raymond Hatton, Mischa Auer, and others of note.

The story is by Sedgwick. Lieuten-ant-Commander Frank Wead and Joe Sherman wrote the screen play.
