PERSONALITIES
A visitor to the Rotary Club dinner yesterday was Mr. A. E. Carrington (Palmerston North). His Grace Archbishop O ’Shea, Metropolitan of New Zealand, is in the Little Company o? Mary Hospital, Wellington. His indisposition is slignt, and it is ex pected that be will be about again this week.
Mr. J. W. Collins, who has been Trade Commissioner for New Zealand at Toronto for a number of years, and who has asked to be relieved of his duties, intends to tour Europe before returning to settle in New Zealand.
Mr. David L. Nathan and his son, Mr. Dennis Nathan, of Auckland, left by the Monterey yesterday for Los Angeles, where they will disembark and motor to Vancouver. They will join the Normandie at New York for England.
Sir Stenson Cooke, general secretary of the Automobile Association of Great Britain, after an extended motor tour of the Dominion, left yesterday by the Monterey for America, 6n route to Eng land.
The death is reported from London of Mr. Mortimer Menpes, the noted etcher. He first came into prominence as a war artist during the Boer War, but later specialised in etching, and is credited with being largely responsible for the revival of the use of colour in that medium.
A representative deputation of citizens and business men waited on the Mayor of Foxton (Mr. M. E. Perreau) with a request that he again offer his services for civic honours at the forthcoming local body election. The deputation was introduced by Mr. D. Christie, who said he felt confident that he was expressing the desire of the majority of ratepayers when he asked Mr..Perreau again to consent to nomination. Messrs. G. F. Smith, W. R. McKenzie, and T. Chaffey referred to the able manner in which Mr. Perreaa had carried out his many duties. Mr. Perreau said he would consider the matter before giving a definite decision at the end of the week.
