Land Settlement in South Africa

COST £1,000,000 YEARLY JOHANNESBURG. The Government propqses to spend at least £1,000,000 a year on land settlement for Europeans during the next 10 or 15 years, and it is anticipated that between 500 and 6000 Europeans will be placed on the laud during the next five years. This formidable increase in the provision for laud settlement purposes is largely due to the purchase of Euro-pean-owned ground for native occupation in terms of the Native Trust and Land Act. The Government is anxious to make available ample land for all those Europeans who will be bought out under this Act, and it is felt that the amount to be set aside annually for that purpose should be more or less the same

as that needed to purchase land for the natives. The Government has already spent about £1,000,000 011 the purchase of farms for natives, and it is expected that a like amount will be needed for 10 to 15 years until the scheme of native settlement is complete.
