MEETING OF THE COUNCIL The Palmerston North City Council met last night, the Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford) presiding. Also present were Crs. R. L. C. Aitchison, W. B. Tennent, G. Tremaine, J. J. Stevenson, J. T. J. Heatley, A. A. Langley, J. Hodgens, M.P., W. Mouldey and W. B. Cameron. Tho West End Progressive Association wrote drawing attention to tho height of a fence at tho corner of West street and Main street and pointing out that this constitutes an obstruction to traffic and is a source of danger to motorists and cyclists. It was decided that the communication bo referred to the assistant engineer to submit a plan and report to tho next meeting of tho works committee.

Tho Municipal Association is to be communicated with in regard to the previous proposal of the council that tho Statute bo amended to give councils power to make by-laws restricting the keeping of bees within urban areas, and the association is to bo requested to state whether arrangements can be made to include such provision in the proposed amendment to the Municipal Corporations Act, 1933. Tho following applications for tarsealing were referred to the estimates for tho ensuing year: —Boundary road between Vogel street and Reretaunga street, Carlton avenue, Beresford street, balance of Bryant street and Lyndhurst street, Featherstone street between Shamrock street and Botanical road, Summerhays street, Ranfurly street, Colombo street. The works committee reported that the Terrace End development and Progressive Association had written requesting that the council give its consideration to a suggestion that traffic in and out of the city via Main street be “one-way” traffic, and also inquiring whether the council would tarseal Main street between Fitzroy street and Millar street. —It was decided that the question of providing that Main street traffic be one way only, be referred to the incoming council, and that the piatter of tarsealing be referred to the estimates for the ensuing year.

The N.Z. Highland Pipe Bands Dominion Championship Contest Committee requested the provision of flags and bunting and a display of coloured lights in the streets during the forthcoming pipe band contest. —It was decided that the committee be advised that the council was agreeable to erect flags and bunting, but owing to the cost involved, it was not prepared to agree to the proposal to erect the coloured lights.

The Takaro Progressive Association wrote drawing attention to the state of the roadway at the Bryant street and Chelwood street intersection and also the Kingswood street and Chelwood street intersection.—lt was decided that the communication be referred to the assistant engineer for a report to the next meeting of the committee. The Terrace End Development and Progressive Association extended thanks for the work carried out in connection with the beautification of the gravel pit and suggested that, where practicable, the sides of the pit should bo buttered and sown in grass.—lt was decided that the communication be referred to the reserves committee.

Requests from the Foxton Surf and Life-saving Club and the Workers’ Educational Association for grants were referred to the estimates for tho coming year, as also was an application from the Willard Home for a further subsidy.

The reserves committee reported that a communication from the Manawatu Hockey Association suggesting that the unused shed and conveniences at Milverton Park bo removed to the Hokowhitu grounds was further considered, and it was decided that the association be informed that the council could n agree to the request. It was further decided that tho question of the erection of accommodation at Hokowhitu Domain be referred to the reserves committee of the incoming council. Tho Automobile Association (Manawatu) forwarded suggestions regarding improvements at the camp site and requesting the appointment of representatives of the council to confer with the special committee of the association. — It was decided that the chairman of the reserves committee (Cr. Aitchison) and city curator bo appointed to meet the representatives of the association and report.

A suggestion from the Manawatu Cricket Association that tho barbed ■wire in the fence on the south side of the outer area at the Sportsground be removed, was agreed to, and plain wire is to be erected in place thereof. It was further decided that a request that the fence removed from the enclosure at the rear of the score board be re-erected in another locality be not agreed to. The Takaro Bowling, Croquet and Tennis Club wrote advising acceptance of the terms for a new lease ’as from April 1, 1938, conditional upon the council granting the club the free use of the tools, mower, etc., similar to the provision in the lease to the Northern Bowling Club. —It was decided that the condition bo agreed to. The abattoir mauager (Mr. A. M. Spilman) presented the following return for March: Stock slaughtered: Cows 360, heifers 61, bullocks 39, calves 75, ewes 647, withers 875, lambs 2 1 2, pigs 74. Stock condemned: Cows 15, sheej) 4, pigs 2. Fees received: £341 IBs.
